Apple to Stream Free McCartney Concert to Apple TV

Of course this isn’t a test for a larger strategy. Nope. Uh-uh.

Apple has deals in place for Netflix-like streaming service??

Jay Yarow at Business Insider covers a report by Peter Misek at Jefferies:

Specifically, he says, “As part of Apple’s roll-out of cloud video services (and eventually an iTV), we believe Apple has unannounced deals with all/most of the studios/TV networks that are similar to the subscription streaming deal between Amazon and CBS.”

Depending on price and which content owners have signed up, this could be a game-changing move:

  • iOS device penetration
  • A dedicated device (Apple TV)
  • A library of both latest and archive content (Netflix’s watch instantly library can be a little lackluster)
  • Spotify for video. A mix of the movies you own, always available through iTunes Replay, plus anything available for instant streaming from their library.

Apple TV's new ability to stream movies from the cloud part of a larger iTunes Replay initiative?

Yes… there are lots of things that iTunes and your Apple TV should have been doing for a long time. Of course, it’s nice that the Music, Movie and TV industries are finally letting Apple do them.

Apple TV Update available for download now

  • Buy TV shows without having to go through iTunes. Previously you could only rent (‘Buy’ library is much, much larger than the ‘Rent’ library)
  • Your previous iTunes TV purchases are now located in the cloud (You’ll be able to delete those hard drive hogging HD TV shows and stream them whenever you like)
  • Vimeo support

Apple are in talks to buy Hulu.

Everyone seems to be asking why. I’m guessing the five years of streaming licenses for a much wider range of content than they currently have for Apple TV might have something to do with it. Want to rent House on Apple TV? You can’t. Not without purchasing it on a computer and streaming it to the device.

Add Hulu’s library to the Apple TV (and locked to Safari on the web) and it becomes a serious contender. $2 Billion? Apple have that to spare in cash EVERY MONTH.

If they don’t buy them, it’s because the license doesn’t allow them to strip out the ads.

Apple testing 1080P movies for Apple TV?

It was as if millions of miles of already overburdened underground cables suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced*.

*I wrote that whilst doing my very Obi Wan.

I’ve been waiting for this for a really long time.

Your move, Consoles.
