The Verge on Android

Like Gruber says, The Verge is killing this space.

If you want to hire great people and have them stay working for you, you have to let them make a lot of decisions and you have to, you have to be run by ideas, not hierarchy. The best ideas have to win, otherwise good people don’t stay.

What Microsoft revealed this week is that they do not believe there is a post-PC era. They’re banking that the PC era will never end.

Gruber in response to all-things-to-all people approach Microsoft has taken with Windows 8.

One of the things I find curious about Android tablets and the BlackBerry PlayBook is that they’ve all chosen to go 16:9. To me, 16:9 tablets only look right when held in landscape — they look too skinny when held in portrait. Considering all the things they copy from Apple, it seems weird not to copy the iPad’s 4:3 aspect ratio. 16:9 is ideal for video, but 4:3 is a good trade-off for a device is meant to be used in portrait much of the time.

I agree with Gruber.

I’d also add that if you’re serious about creating a platform that’s good at more than just video, you’re extremely foolish to choose 16:9.

Why? You’re trying to lure iOS developers and content publishers to create for your platform. They already have to re-write their code for your devices; should they have to worry about resizing the interface too? That’s a considerable barrier to entry.

Why should you take my word for it? We’ve launched over 20 iPad apps in the last year from major content owners, and two publishing platforms that are being used by over 200 global brands. The cost of additional development has always been the tipping point for clients; they just can’t justify it with the current sales of Android devices.
